Languages of the World Re-launch!

Dec 23, 2011 by

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the new and revised Languages of the World blog site.  With the help of our web-developers Kevin Morton and Jordan Sandoval, I’ve been able to overhaul the design of this blog. Among the changes you will see are: the new layout and graphic design; a new categorization scheme for the posts including Categories and Places drop-down menus, which allows to find old posts more easily; the Popular Articles and Random Discovery sections on the Home page, which allows to read posts on topics you might not have thought of before; the new Resources area of the site hosting pages on Recommended blogs — including our sister-blog — book recommendations, language maps and sound recordings in various languages; finally, the Books by Asya area on the right side of the Home page allows for an easy access to my books on You will also see some advertizements, which will hopefully cover some of the expenses in running this blog. I hope you don’t find the adverts too intrusive. If you’d like to advertize on Languages of the World, there is a special section at the bottom of each page set up for this purpose.

All that is needed now is new and exciting content, and I will be working on it, while also contributing some posts to the GeoCurrents blog (do check it out!). My current blogging plans include some posts on the range of grammatical expression in languages of the world; geographical determinism and its non-application to language change; and languages of the Caucasus.

As before, I welcome comments and criticism from informed readers, but this is not a forum for venting political or ideological frustrations. Be nice. Keep it clean. Stay on topic.

Best holiday wishes!
